Cincinnati, OH – Jan. 7, 2026 — Companions on a Journey Grief Support is introducing Path to Peace, a new monthly support group designed specifically for individuals grieving the death of a loved one due to overdose. Created in partnership with Spring Grove Funeral Homes, the new group aims to provide a compassionate, understanding environment for a type of loss that is often uniquely complex and deeply isolating.
“Overdose loss can bring a wide range of emotions—including guilt, anger, shame, confusion, and profound sorrow,” explains COJ Founder Sheila Munafo-Kanoza. “We have found that many mourners express feeling misunderstood or hesitant to seek support due to the stigma that often surrounds substance-related deaths.”
While COJ has always served people mourning those lost to overdose in their open grief groups, Path to Peace was created to address these challenges directly and only with others experiencing the same type of loss. Facilitated by individuals who have personally experienced overdose loss, the group offers a safe space where participants can share without judgment, connect with others who truly understand, and learn tools to navigate their grief.
“People grieving overdose loss often feel alone in their experience,” said Munafo-Kanoza. “Path to Peace provides a community where their stories are honored, their emotions are validated, and healing can begin.”
