November is here, and so is fall, which brings the need for some fall self-care! With colder temperatures and earlier sunsets, these are signs that we are also approaching the holiday season. Especially during a grief journey, the holidays can feel different, but there are small things you can do for yourself to help brighten your mood.

Focus on gratitude

While grief can be challenging during the fall season, take time to think about what you are grateful for. Even noticing the small things is helpful. What sights or sounds gave you a moment of joy? Are there accomplishments you are celebrating? What is going well in your life? Making gratitude lists helps your focus shift to that, which can bring happiness to your gloomy days.

Fall self-care

There is nothing wrong with indulging in a little self-care by eating comfort food! Perhaps you like a nice tasty pumpkin pie roll. Give yourself permission to enjoy a slice of warm apple pie for dessert! As you think ahead to Thanksgiving, think about the food that was always a part of your celebrations. What did you enjoy cooking with the person you are missing? Are there any family recipes traditionally made for Thanksgiving dinners? Perhaps trying to make one of those dishes will lift your spirits. And don’t forget about social self-care. Take time to think about who you would like to spend time with around the holiday and make plans for that. If some are out of town, and you enjoy traveling or road trips, think about visiting them so you are surrounded by support. For those who live further away, consider a phone or video call to catch up with each other.

Weather changes

During fall, it can really be very foggy and wet outside. When you’re in a stretch of gloomy weather, enjoy your favorite coffee at a local cafe. Do you have a sweet tooth and enjoy pastries? Try a fall sweet treat. Apple fritters and pumpkin scones are pastries that are particularly popular in the fall. Even just being observant of the season can bring you back up emotionally. Whether you need to rake leaves or not, you are surrounded by changing leaves. Notice how they have changed to bright yellow, vibrant orange, and light brown shades. Grief can be a lot to experience as the weather changes and becomes chilly, yet some fall self-care can take the weight off your shoulders!
