How much time do you spend reading to your kids? Even if they can read themselves, this can be a sweet way to connect and bond. Children who are grieving are often going through a range of emotions, and it is helpful for us to find ways to connect with them in calm, positive ways. Reading together is a great way to do this.

This week, consider taking a trip to the library together and getting some books that both of you will enjoy. If your child is in preschool or just starting elementary school, a stack of picture books will do the trick. But if they are in middle-to-upper elementary school or older, look for chapter books that you can read a portion of to them each evening. Think back on books that you enjoyed as a kid; perhaps your kid will enjoy the same books. This can make it fun to share a common interest!

The ritual of reading together each night can be a way to bond and also create a sense of safety for your grieving child, as engaging in regular, predictable activities can be regulating for your children and helpful on their grief journey!
