This time of year is when the summer has come to an end and we transition into fall. For some this is a really exciting time, while for others this is a time of year that we dread. Going back to school, heading into the holidays missing someone; our schedules get so busy again that sometimes this feels overwhelming.
With the temperatures cooling off, it can be tempting for some of us to stay inside all the time and binge-watch television shows because we may be a little (or a lot) overwhelmed by everything going on. But going outside for a walk (even in the cold) can be so good for us! The next time you’re feeling restless or a little down, go ahead and throw on a layer or two and go outside. Take a nice walk (short or long – it’s up to you), breathe in the fresh air, and stretch your legs a little bit.
It’s easy to get caught up with all of our negative thoughts, worries, and anxieties in our own heads, or to dwell on the “what if’s” from previous seasons in our lives, so getting outside (literally) and getting a little active is a great way to refocus on the here and now. While you’re outside, listen to the sounds you hear. Breathe in the air and let it fill and refresh you. Feel the cold on your face and notice how it makes your skin feel. While you’re out you could even pop by your favorite coffee shop and get a hot coffee or tea! Take some time to reflect on what you enjoy about the fall and this season in general. While you’re at it, take some time to reflect on what you’re thankful for in life.
If reflecting on life, even by looking for things to be thankful for, seems or becomes overwhelming, just stick to the here and now and focus on what you notice from your five senses: taste, hearing, sight, smell, and touch. What does that drink taste like that you’re enjoying on your walk? What sounds do you hear around you? What are you seeing that really draws you in? What kinds of smells are around you? And what does your sweatshirt, sweater, gloves, or anything else in your hands feel like?
This season, take a little time to refocus on the here and now and enjoy the outside on a little walk. Your emotions, mind, and body will thank you for it later.
